Dolcetto, or “little sweet one”, is one of the few true black grapes, meaning the flesh and skin are a dark purple. This vintage represents our first adventure with Dolcetto. Originally grown in Piedmont, Italy, we feel this grape is doing wonderfully in the hot climate of West Texas. Our grower for this varietal is Jet Wilmeth of Diamante Doble Vineyards (Tokio, TX). Becker Vineyards has a long-standing relationship with Jet Wilmeth and his proven green thumb as one of our premier grape growers.
This vintage was harvested at 26.2°Brix. The grape’s dark skins are high in tannins, thus need a shorter maceration time. The grapes were fermented at warm temperatures for 14 days and aged in a mixture of new and used, American and French barrels for 16 months. It’s a rare occasion to have such an excellent vintage that requires no blending, no alternations but our 2015 Dolcetto was such.
The 2015 Dolcetto delivers a blend of cooked red fruits, toasted oak, vanilla, leather and forest floor. This lighter bodied red wine with a balanced astringency is drinkable now, but will age nicely over the next 3-5 years.
Aromatics: Black cherries, hint of anise, eucalyptus, green tea leaves, smoky notes
On the palate: Tannic, bright red fruits, raspberries, strawberries, low-medium acidity
Pairing: Pastas, pizzas, and the haute cuisine of Texas BBQ
